Have you ever looked around your house and thought, this is exactly how I feel inside?

Megan Caldwell has. She's a mom of three, the creator of the ROCKSTAR Mom Method, and the host of The ROCKSTAR Mom podcast. She's also burned out twice. In this episode, she shares why chasing balance keeps busy moms stuck, and why the way out is a lot smaller than you think.

When your home matches how you feel

Megan's first burnout hit about 12 months postpartum, right after she moved from teaching high school to a full-time university job. She barely remembers what her home looked like. She was too busy serving everyone else to spend time in it.

The second one came years later. Three small kids. A new house in Portland. A fitness franchise to run. The baby gear, the big-kid stuff, the pets and the work stuff were all mixed together.

Her home was as chaotic as she felt inside. Did the clutter cause the burnout, or did the burnout cause the clutter? Megan thinks it went both ways. Your inner world and your outer world feed each other.

Why moms need to come first

I said I loved that Megan puts herself on an equal playing field with her family. She pushed right back.

Megan wants moms to put themselves first. When your health, confidence and inner knowing come first, you have more energy for everything else. Your home. Your work. Your family.

She starts her clients with what she calls the ROCKSTAR Mom Essentials. Get really clear on three things:

  • Your priorities

  • Your values

  • Your vision

We usually think about these for our family or our kids. Megan says they have to start with you.

Why balance is BS

Ask a group of overwhelmed moms what they want, and most will say balance. Megan says balance means perfection. A tidy home, a great job and smooth relationships, all at the same time. Nobody gets there.

We're always changing, so we're never going to be perfectly balanced. Megan invites moms to aim for alignment or harmony instead. Think of an orchestra. Not every instrument plays at once. There's give and take.

In your home, that might look like letting go of the model-home picture and asking for something else. Presence. Peace. A cozy, lived-in space where you can connect with the people you love.

What a house fire taught her

Megan's family lost their home to a fire, along with 98% of their belongings. They were out of the house for 15 months.

She remembers standing on her lawn, looking at the smoke and the broken windows. And she felt a wave of peace and calm.

That day confirmed the deeper work she does with women. Everyday stress is real. A mother-in-law coming over to a messy house. A tough email from your boss. But the bigger question is how well you know yourself and your needs, so you can get through the hard seasons too.

Three steps to change

Megan walks moms through three phases.

  1. Awareness. Start with what she calls the power of pause. Take a breath and notice where you feel tension. In your body, your schedule or your home.

  2. Decide. Once you notice the hot buttons, you get to decide whether to do something about them. Nobody else can make that choice for you.

  3. Practice. Start tiny. Megan calls these MVAs, or minimal viable actions. What's the smallest thing you can do today for your health, your marriage or your clutter?

I know the pull of the big overhaul. Our family sold almost everything and moved to Europe. A new city didn't change my habits. Small, steady shifts are what last. Megan calls them one-degree shifts.

Your minimal viable action for tonight

If you want one tiny action for your home, try a 10-minute tidy tonight. Set a timer. Reset the spaces you use most. Stop when the timer goes off.

That's exactly what Tindy does. It's my home tidying app with a nightly 10-minute Lightning Tidy, a built-in timer and streaks to keep you going. You can try Tindy free at tindy.app.
